Typical Evil Empire Shit

April 12, 2015

If you’re tuning in to Sunday Night Baseball, check out how the Yankees are doctoring their infield. It’s odd.

Teams have trying to get a competitive edge forever–I think Bill Veeck on the White Sox was the first team official to gloat about it. By the end of the Trammell/Whittaker era in Detroit the infield grass was so long you could cut it with a scythe.

Anyway, they water the infield as usual, but then put drying material in two spots: where the runner leads from first, and where the runner slides into second. Apparently helps with baserunning and stealing when Brett Gardner and traitorous moneygrubbing bastard Jacoby Ellsbury are on first I guess.

Maybe this particular measure is more common than I know, but I’ve never seen it before.
