Hi CL,

Jered Weaver…

Over/Under….ERA below or above 5.00?

Does he get to 30 starts?
Does he get to 5 wins?
Does he get to 15 losses?
…Go Padres
–BOB SAGET
Hi Saget,
I’ll take “under” on the ERA, because Petco Park and facing a pitcher every ninth batter can only help. Over for wins but only barely. Under on both losses and starts because he’s hit the DL three times in the last five years and never for the minimum stay.
Jered Weaver Projection: 6-12, 4.70 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 140 IP, 80 K, 40 BB
So still unrosterable.
As an aside, Weaver is an adamant opponent of analytics. Refuses to helpn pitch into shifts, refuses to look at hitter spray charts etc. You’d think he might want to change his tune there to help his own fading skill set (last year’s heater was 83 MPH, touching 85), but anytime I’ve seen or read an interview with him he’s as dumb as a bag of wet hay. Throw in the fact that he’s already earned $96 million in his career and I doubt he’ll feel the need to learn new tricks.
As to the Padres, you’re right, their staff is crap. It’s a shame because the Padres’ #4 starter pitching at home was always a useful spot-start for fantasy purposes (the Justin Germanos and Odrisamer Despaignes of the world). Not much joy there this year.
There’s not much on the Padres’ farm for pitching help in 2017, but by going out and getting Weaver, Jhoulys Chacin, and Trevor Cahill, the Padres are commiting to not starting any prospects’ service time clocks this year. Dinelson Lamet may get a look late if the bats somehow put this team in the hunt for a wild card. (The offence will be OK if Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe can keep it going all year.)
The most interesting Padre pitcher for streaming purposes is actually never-healthy Christian Friedrich, if he ever gets right. Don’t hold your breath.
Thanks for writing,
CL
